Inaugural Kensington & Chelsea Business Awards showcase local business achievements

Hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the first ever Kensington & Chelsea Business Awards at a glittering ceremony at the Millennium Gloucester Kensington Hotel last night (18 October).

Hosted by the Kensington & Chelsea Chamber of Commerce in association with Banham Security as headline sponsor, the 2018 Kensington & Chelsea Business Awards aimed to recognise and reward the achievements of the local business community across the whole of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.

Beginning with a reception in the moonlit conservatory on the top floor of the Millennium Gloucester Hotel, resplendent with palm trees and an ice sculpture created for the occasion, guests from the local business world networked with each other before being treated to a sumptuous three-course gala dinner, followed by the awards ceremony itself.

Chris Gilbert, former presenter of Sky Sports World Cup Show, hosted the ceremony, with awards presented by category sponsors in front of an audience of more than 240 people.

Awards were presented in thirteen categories, including employer of the year, best new business, best hotel and best independent retailer. All category winners were put forward for the coveted title of overall ‘Business of the Year’.

The Business of the Year award was presented to Food Alert, a consultancy offering food safety, health & safety and fire safety services, software and training to businesses across the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Food Alert were also Best SME category winner.

Speaking at the ceremony, Michael Stone, chairman of Kensington & Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, said: “These inaugural awards demonstrate that we have a vibrant and engaging business community in Kensington & Chelsea. I am completely amazed at the quality and high standard of the businesses we have in the borough and I’m proud of all those who entered the awards. They’re employing serious numbers of people, they are innovative, they’re trading internationally and they’re growing.”

Martin Herbert, managing director of headline sponsor Banham Security, commented: “I am impressed with the dynamism, diversity and entrepreneurial flair of all the businesses here tonight. They should be truly proud of their achievements, whatever their size. The awards are a great accolade for those who win, helping them gain new business and win new customers. Tonight’s event also provides recognition, peer-to-peer endorsement and valuable networking opportunities for everyone here.”

Councillor Catherine Faulks, lead member for skills and enterprise at the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, said: “I am delighted and excited to see so many here at these first awards. The talent and flair of businesses large and small is what makes the borough a special place. The skills and enterprise portfolio is hugely important, recognising the value local businesses and entrepreneurs bring to the borough. We want to understand the barriers local businesses face and how we can best support them, while also supporting young people to develop their skills through work experience provided by the businesses.”

The atmosphere at the gala event was buzzing all evening, with many attendees praising the idea of a celebratory event to recognise business achievement. Comments included:

Arjun Varma of Chakra restaurant: “This is a great location and a lovely event. We know the venue well as we cater for other events here sometimes. We’re really interested to meet other local businesses.”

Duska Bosnjak of Peter Jones: “The awards are a great initiative to celebrate the good work of businesses in the borough. It’s so important for businesses to recognise each other’s achievements and work together as a community. We need more events like this!”

Barry Boydell of Boydell & Co: “This is an excellent and great fun! It’s brilliant to encourage local businesses of all sizes to take part.”

Susan Metcalfe of Susan Metcalfe Residential: “This is shaping up to be a lovely event and we’re thrilled to be here and supporting it. What a fantastic turnout!”

Dan Munro of Please Connect Me Ltd: “We’re really impressed at such a great event. We’ve heard of a lot of the businesses here and we’re excited to meet them. It’s far easier to do business with your neighbour and together we can work together for the good of the business community.”

Ellie Ruddock of Kensington & Chelsea Chamber of Commerce: “This is a fantastic opportunity for businesses to take part in something new and refreshing – and to be competitive with each other.”

Antoine Clais of Voltaware: “We’re very happy to be here and it’s a great idea to hold such a business event. The borough has a reputation for being predominantly residential, so it’s good to put the business community on the map. It’s really useful to encourage businesses to meet each other and network. In the two years my business has been based here, this is the first time I’ve met fellow local businesses.”

Daria of the Chelsea Creperie: “I’ve met some amazing people tonight. There’s lots of positive energy, motivation and advice from people here. Networking with other local businesses in this way is a great idea and I’d love there to be more events!”
